Diet breaks have gained popularity recently & with good reason: there is data to suggest that diet breaks may help attenuate metabolic slowing during caloric restriction, help spare lean body mass, protect against weight regain post diet
But diet breaks aren’t all positive
1) They increase the duration of the total diet since you are spending more time out of a calorie deficit than you would with continuous dieting
2) For many people, they feel ‘thrown off’ during diet breaks. It breaks their dieting rhythm and they & up having difficulty getting back in the groove
3) Some people take the term ‘diet break’ way too literally. Instead of eating at maintenance calories they use the ‘diet break’ to just eat whatever they want and then are shocked when they gain weight.
