“Pumping Iron” was an ambitious project, way ahead of its time – a documentary that introduced the world to bodybuilding and helped make Arnold a household name! It showed that bodybuilders were more than two-dimensional characters who lifted weights and flexed their muscles. Director George Butler was a visionary who believed in the sport; his casting of the human side of bodybuilding legends such as Arnold, Lou, Franco and others showed that he had the balls to show the world that bodybuilders are people just like the rest of us – only bigger and stronger.
Finally, bodybuilders had a movie that spoke to them. Something they identified with – a film that depicted their world.
MD interviews George Butler, the man who shot the photos for the book Pumping Iron and went on to direct the film. Mr. Butler talks about how he met Arnold, the struggles to get the film made, why it’s become a cultural phenomenon, and he shares his exclusive photos with MD readers.
Also inside are exclusive interviews with Top Competitors competing at The 2011 Arnold Classic including: Branch Warren, Victor Martinez, Dennis Wolf, Dexter Jackson, Evan Centopani, Roelly Winklaar, Ronny Rockel and Essa Obaid!
