November / December 2004:
With the 2004 IFBB contest season over now here come my thoughts on the GNC and the Olympia.
We started our 4 week trip to the US in Atlanta for the 2004 GNC! It was a fantastic contest and Victor Martinez won his second pro show! The promoters did a super job! Everything was great! (I read that some fans complained that they couldn`t see well because all the seat where on the same level........ that is the only negative thing I heard) Even the results where ok! I had Troy Alves in third but nothing to really complain about......
At that time we had no idea how bad the Olympia judging would be (or how much improvements Gustavo Badell would make in 3 weeks).I can only wonder! Maybe the GNC results where good because the judges where much much closer to the stage in Atlanta. Maybe some of the judges really can`t see as far as they have to at the Olympia with the VIP seats in front of them? I simply can`t think of another reason for the Olympia results! Right from the first round I could see that a lot of the big names in the show where off! No question about it! It was very easy to see that and all the pics show it too! Gunter, Markus, Dennis beating Victor Martinez in the symmetry round is a joke! A real bad one! Victor was harder, more symmetrical and had better proportions! He might not be as big but he sure had the necessary size too! I even think that Darrem Charles should have been in the top six too! But I think that Victor received the worst judging call of the evening - 9th place - unbelievable!
And then Pavol Jablonicky came in 11th. Pavol is a great and friendly guy, but beating Johnnie, Troy, Kris, Craig, Mustafa.......??? I really believe that the judges just couldn`t see well enough! They saw Pavol`s standing out shredded condition but they didn`t see good enough too see other important details like....... well everything else! And now to the challenge round!
Overall I think the idea to do something new was great. (I heard that Peter McGough wanted to do something for years but nobody let him.....) And it was entertaining to watch for sure. I think most of the fans enjoyed watching it. But Gustavo moving ahead of Dexter showed the big flaw of the new challenge round. Gustavo (better than ever and 4th place for sure) simply was not the better BBer on that evening!
Dexter was in the best shape ever. I think it was close between him and Jay - depending on what you want (a classic case of apples vs. oranges from Shawn). But as the challenges went Gustavo was able to move ahead! (By the way - Gustavo not beating Jay Cutler in the back double biceps and Dexter not beating Ronnie in abs and thights - even Gustavo was better than Ronnie in that pose - showed that the judges clearly did not go by LOOK only as the judged the different challenges...........) In the end the athlete that clearly was (at least) the third best competitor on that stage did not end up in third place! I think that can`t not be allowed in a BB contest for entertaining reason alone! Otherwise the whole "Sport"- Idea and the judging becomes stupid right from the beginning. I am pretty sure that the promoters will fix that for future events. For more about the Olympia read Raymond`s contest report!
One more thing I need to get out there: Maybe you noticed that for the first time since Muscletime was founded in 1999 we did not have backstage photos online. AMI said they plan on raising the sport to a new level. They say they want it to become much bigger! But now at the 2004 Olympia they did not allow backstage access for BB Media except for Flex magazine! (Not even Mits Okabe was allowed to get some more footage for the battle tape) Seems to me that AMI thinks by restricting access and keeping it in their own yard the sport will grow???????? (it sure is a big yard, but it is and will always be just one single yard) They probably think that they will sell so much more mags now because you guys will all buy FLEX now becaue you want the Backstage pics. (on the other hand - maybe most of FLEX readers would buy the Olympia issue anyway????)
One thing is clear to me - that is not the way to raise BB to bigger audiences! It will not change anything at all. It just pissed of a lot of people (fans, media people, maybe even the athletes and me).
Same goes for Weider contracts! Weider publications sponsors tons of athletes! But they do not allow them to take pics with other publications! WHY? Wouldn`t it be much better for sales if they allowed us to take pics in Ronnie`s room and have him wear a FLEX shirt for example? - We had at least 100.000 unique visitors on MT in October. Wouldn`t it be good advertising for FLEX mag????? The way they do it nobody gets to see their athletes other than in their own Publication! How in heaven is that supposed to help BB grow or to help FLEX reach wider audiences??? I can`t believe that this system goes on for ages now and nobody ever started wondering about it`s benefit at the Weider headquaters. I always thought that Joe Weider being the father, founder and all was the reason for that. But now AMI keeps going with it......... It is beyond me.......sorry!
We`ll see what happens next year! I know that a lot of people want Wayne DeMillia back in charge (even those that always complained about him)! As far as I have heard there are only the Ironman, the Arnold, SanFran GP and the Olympia set for next year! The IFBB will have to start acting pretty soon if the want some more shows on the calendar in 2005!
